How To Stay Grounded During Mercury Retrograde
What is Mercury Retrograde?
Three to four times a year the planet Mercury appears to travel backwards in the sky. This backwards motion is an illusion caused by differences in planetary orbit. Astrologers tell us (based on the notion that “as above, so below”) that this perceived backwards motion can wreak havoc in the areas of our life that are ruled by Mercury: all forms of communications, transportation and travel, as well as formal contracts and agreements.
I don’t know about you, but this idea has really stressed me out in the past– so much so that I have felt like crawling into bed for a month to avoid these mishaps! But then I started to notice significant patterns arising in the intuitive healing sessions I did during Mercury retrograde periods. The spirit guides were giving consistent advice and initiating similar healing opportunities for my clients: slow down, heal the past, and return to what you started but never finished. Putting these messages together I have created a guide to help you navigate the challenges of Mercury retrograde.

How to Stay Grounded and Calm During Mercury Retrograde
Slow down. If you don’t listen to any other of the suggestions in this blog post, please listen to this one. Be like mercury appears to be in the sky: don’t be in a rush. In today’s fast-paced society, choosing to slow down is like choosing to wear a clown nose all day or eating your food standing on your head. It is definitely not expected, and sometimes not practical. Yet, slowing down is the key to a stress-free Mercury retrograde period. Make the choice that brings inner peace, not validation from the outside world. Add the intention of bringing mindfulness to your daily life. How would you interact with your world if you had nowhere to be and nothing to get done except for what you are called to do in the moment?
Master the art of communication. Mercury retrograde gives you the opportunity to carefully choose your words. Don’t avoid important conversations, but don’t rush them either. Take your time and say what you mean and listen with your heart open. You will find that treading slowly through life will naturally give you more presence in your conversations and you can use this to your advantage! For written communication, give yourself extra time to revise. If you need to send an important email or text, be sure to leave 24 hours between writing and sending so that you can re-visit your words before hitting the send button.
Heal the past. Mercury Retrograde is the perfect time to heal past traumas – both those from your childhood and from past lives. When someone signs up for a session during Mercury retrograde, I often tell them to get ready for some deep healing of the past! Part of the purpose of Mercury retrograde is to allow us the time to slow down and heal what we have been avoiding in our busy lives.
Finish what you started. This could mean finishing projects you started earlier in the year, revisiting a conversation you started with your spouse last month, or finally hauling your donations off to the thrift store. You may also feel drawn to re-organizing or re-decorating your home at this time.
Embrace the roadblocks. Ask yourself – how is this broken printer, bad cell service, tense argument with your child, or travel delay serving me? Slow down and let the roadblock redirect you towards where you are meant to be, not where you think you should be.
